- Empty toilet rolls (1 per cracker, although you need another 2 to help make the ends of the crackers). An empty roll of wrapping paper cut into suitable lengths would work just as well
- Decorative paper: wrapping paper, brown craft paper, or even old newspapers and magazines would work as you can embellish them afterwards
- Ruler and pencil
- Scissors
- Glue/sellotape
- Ties: you can use gift wrapping ribbon, or things like scraps of wool, and even garden twine if you are going for a more rustic look
- Cracker snaps – these are easily available online or from places like Hobbycraft (UK). If you can't find any, you can always resort to shouting BANG as you pull the crackers...
Cut a rectangle of paper about 20cm x 30cm (roughly A4 size/ US Letter)

Lay one of your cardboard tubes in the middle. If you are using cracker snaps, feed it through the tube, and then tape at either end to secure in place.

Lay a cardboard tube either side of the central one, and roll your paper around the tubes. Secure with glue or sticky tape.

Pull one of the tubes out by about 5-10cm and give the end a twist to scrunch the paper slightly. Remove the tube entirely and then use the scrunched paper as a guide to where to tie your ribbon.

Make sure you don't forget to put the gift/joke/hat etc in at this point! Slide them in through the tube at the other end.
Repeat the tying process for the second end, and your homemade cracker is ready!
